A water softener is one of the most reliable appliances in your home, often running for years with minimal attention. But like any equipment, it performs best with some basic maintenance. Here is what you need to know to keep your softener running smoothly.
Check and Add Salt Regularly
The most important maintenance task is keeping salt in the brine tank. Check the salt level monthly - you should always see salt above the water line. Most households need to add salt every 4-8 weeks, depending on water usage and hardness levels.
Tips for Adding Salt
- Keep the tank at least one-quarter full
- Do not overfill past two-thirds full
- Use high-quality water softener salt (pellets or crystals)
- Avoid rock salt, which contains more impurities
Watch for Salt Bridges
Sometimes a hard crust of salt forms in the brine tank, creating a "bridge" that prevents salt from dissolving into the water below. If your water starts feeling hard despite having salt visible, a salt bridge may be the culprit.
To check for a salt bridge, carefully push a broom handle down into the salt. If it breaks through a hard layer to reveal water or mushy salt below, you have found a bridge. Carefully break up the crust so salt can dissolve properly.
Clean the Brine Tank Annually
Once a year, it is a good idea to clean out the brine tank:
- Use up the remaining salt or scoop it into a bucket
- Disconnect and remove the brine tank
- Rinse out any sediment or salt residue
- Wipe down the interior
- Reassemble and add fresh salt
Check the Settings
Modern softeners have digital controls that rarely need adjustment. But it is worth periodically confirming your settings are correct for your household:
- Hardness level should match your water test results
- Regeneration time should be set for when water use is lowest (often 2 AM)
- Regeneration frequency should match your household's water consumption
Listen for Normal Operation
Get familiar with how your softener sounds during regeneration. This process typically takes 1-2 hours and involves several distinct phases with different sounds. If you notice unusual noises or the regeneration cycle seems much longer or shorter than normal, it may indicate a problem.
When to Call a Professional
While basic maintenance is simple, some issues require professional attention:
- Water is not getting soft despite adequate salt
- The system is using excessive amounts of salt
- Water pressure has dropped significantly
- You see water leaking from the unit
- The softener is not regenerating on schedule
- Unusual noises during operation
Annual Professional Service
Consider having your water softener professionally serviced annually. A technician can:
- Inspect and clean internal components
- Check the resin bed condition
- Verify proper salt dosing
- Test water hardness before and after
- Identify potential issues before they become problems
Extending Your Softener's Life
Quality water softeners can last 15-20 years or more with proper care. Beyond regular maintenance:
- Use high-purity salt to minimize residue buildup
- Keep the area around the softener clean and dry
- Address any issues promptly before they worsen
- Follow manufacturer guidelines for your specific model
